PCIe 4.0 NVMe, up to 7,450 MB/s read: a 40GB model file (70B at Q4) loads in roughly 7s from a cold cache. 2TB holds ~44 such models. Not a VRAM substitute: llama.cpp mmap or DeepSpeed/accelerate NVMe offload streaming weights from SSD is 10-100x slower than VRAM or RAM, so only for experiments. Cooling: a simple M.2 heatsink (most boards include one) keeps sustained reads at full speed.
